Installation
The device should be placed outside, or as close as possible to a window in direct visibility with the satellite, to maximise the chances of receiving messages. It should be installed in the following positions, in order of preference:
Battery autonomy
The table below summarizes the estimated device autonomy for different configurations of sensor and GNSS acquisition intervals.
Adjusting the acquisition interval and the number of messages transmitted can significantly extend the operational life of the device.
Guidelines for optimal performance
Is the device positionned with the antenna in direct visibility to the sky?
The the device’s antenna needs to have a direct line of sight to the sky. The device should ideally be placed outdoors or as close to a window as possible to maintain unobstructed visibility to the satellite.
Is there any obstacle near the device?
The area around the device must be free from obstacles like buildings, mountains, or dense foliage, which can block the signal to the satellite.
Is the device in contact of a metal surface?
Avoid placing the device on metal surfaces, as this can cause antenna mismatch and disrupt data transmission. Insulate the Explorer from metal surfaces with a layer of insulation material, such as 2-3 cm of medium-density plastic.
Check the surrounding temperature
The Explorer operating temperature must be between -20°C and 55°C.
Unsheltered environment
The Explorer device is rated IP54, offering protection against limited water and dust exposure but is not waterproof. If placed in Lying flat position (see Installation paragraph) in an unsheltered environment for several weeks, water pooling on the top can lead to infiltration. Therefore, position 2 is not recommended for unsheltered installations.
